Back to something of value

I've been debating setting up a facebook page for my class(es). I've seen discussions on this, both pro and con. I wonder, have any of you used any of these tools (facebook, twitter, etc) in your classes. Also how do they compare, in your opinion, to the course home page?

I think a Facebook for the Adjunct (Affiliate) Faculty Lounge would be great.

Personally, I would not use Facebook for class work or research. It is a more personal social network that allows for far too many distractions beyond the class work. Same with Twitter - and with Twitter you are limited to only 140 characters per post.

I would set up a Blogspot site or a personal site where you can better control the content and/or distractions better than you can with an FB or Twitter account.

Mathew - Curious comment - why do you think that this blog does not do the trick?

I have a sociology assignment looking at "impression management" and sanctions using Facebook as a form of social interaction. It's also a way to keep in touch with former students -- my pathetically small list of "friends" is mostly former students: alive, well, and out there still learning! KKS

I wonder how it is that you have access to the all affiliate faculty list for email purposees. I don't mind receiving emails from the college, but I am not interested in your blog spot or your emails. Thank you.

I have personal accounts for Twitter and Facebook, but I don't use those applications for classes. Instead, I use a wiki for each class that I teach. Here's the one for my ENG 1020 classes at Metro: http://eng1020ec.wetpaint.com/ .

Howie, I haven't used a social networking site myself as an adjunct (so to speak) for my classes, but I have read a few things (including http://chronicle.com/blogPost/When-Professors-Create-Soci/4176/) that noted some students think these are like "creepy tree houses" when profs enter their social networking realm. I use a Ning social network for my technical writing classes at Red Rocks. We also have one for adjuncts in the English department there. If you're not familiar with Ning, you might look at this site: http://college2.ning.com/ .

I'll set up a social network under ning.com today or tomorrow so that we can play with it.

(temper tantrum resolved - Elizabeth and others - Thanks for the words of support)

Here's a link to a successful Twitter in the classroom:

I strongly suggest that you might follow Professor Binnings' link. I'll put it below as well!

I would support the idea of a FB group for affiliate faculty because I am on FB all the time and would check it more often. I have contemplated a group for my students and may still set it up. If you have a group, you can post the link to this blog.

I just found this by accident via MetroConnect...

Thanks, Karen Middleton/Pol Sc
